(More customer reviews)As most other people commented, this is an excellent stand, very sturdy, very classy looking. Easy assembly, maybe 30-40 minutes. Before I bought this, I could not find any info on the clearance of the shelfs; I have a high end receiver (Sony STR-DG720) that is about 6.25 inches high, and it wasn't clear to me if that would fit in any of the shelves on this stand. So here is some info on shelf heights and clearance: on the bottom shelf, you can fit anything up to 5.25 inches in height, which is more than enough for DVD player, PS2, PS3, etc., but not a high end receiver. The shelf above has more clearance; units up to 6.5 inches high slide easily in from the front (or back), so my Sony Receiver fits in nicely. Since the glass above (which the TV stands on) is supported by "domed" metal beams, you actually have up to 8.5 inches of height, if you slide any unit onto that shelf from the sides. This is because the metal frames the whole unit stand on cover a little bit of the total height of the second shelf at the front and back, but not on the sides. I actually was almost able to put my center speaker bar on top of my tall receiver on this shelf when sliding it in from the side, there was just a tenth of an inch or so height missing to do that. But since there is so much horizontal space on both shelves anyway, that was not needed (one can easily fit three components side by side on each shelf). So in summary, there is more than enough height on the second shelf for tall electronic units like high end receivers. Hope this is helpful!

Had a few minor glitches early on but they never amounted to much, then about 4 months after purchase the screen began to pop from its normal square display to an oval shape then pop back out. Also had issues of display being almost all red, blue or green. PS2 hooked up with component was great, except that the screen went a bright neon green square a few times to days before it died. The final night it displayed all the above and when it was powered off then back on it went click, click, pop. I have spent the last 5 weeks with we'll need to pick it up and bring it to the shop, parts on order, well that part came in but now we need this part, we needed to get approval from Panasonic to order this part, still waiting. Called Panasonic wondering if they could help they were helpful, said they would call repair shop to see what the holdup was would call me back Monday, on Wednesday still no call, I call back, they NEVER called repair shop. Overall
TV 4 stars, PS2 on TV 5 stars, panasonic service 0 stars, getting this unit repaired 0 stars. My last Panasonic purchase!

(More customer reviews)This is my first HD TV purchase ever, so I made sure to do my homework. I spent days researching brands, plasmas v. LCDs, 720p v. 1080p resolutions, and 42" v. 50" screens. Friends and family kept telling me, "Get a LCD. Get a 1080p."
The fact is after combing through review after review from consumers and professional critics alike, it became evident that Panasonic is leading the way with plasma technology, and the years-old issues with these TVs (burn-in, heat, glare) are all but resolved. In fact, plasmas offer smoother motion, deeper blacks and wider viewing angles than their LCD rivals.
Screen size and resolution, I found, go hand-in-hand. The rule of thumb: 50" or less in screen size is not worth the extra $ for 1080p. The increase in resolution only really becomes appreciable with screen sizes over 50". Too, one can only truly take advantage of 1080p with a Blu-ray DVD player. HD channels are sent at lower resolutions, though obviously much better than standard 480i.
Armed with this knowledge, I set out to find the best 50" plasma 720p I could find that fit within my budget. Sony and Pioneer were out. The next tier included Samsung, Toshiba, and Panasonic. The latter won hands down.
Whether I am watching DirectTV HD or my standard DVD player, the picture quality is nothing short of amazing. I love the anti-reflective coating on the screen; works beautifully in our well-lit room and does not mute the colors. It took a minute for my two year-old to get over Scooby-Doo outsizing him, but he's hooked now.
The one minor complaint I see in other reviews is bass distortion with the speakers. I do not use the "bass boost" function and have not noticed anything but clean sound. In fact, speech, music, and effects sound quite good and balanced. Most will use surround sound for movies anyway, I suspect. The only thing that peeves me is the digital audio out. It only supports 2 channel stereo to a receiver.
In closing, I believe this is the best value you will find for a top quality product in this category. Get one, and you won't just watch TV, you'll experience it.

(More customer reviews)Coming from an "old" 720p Panasonic plasma, I had high hopes for this TV and boy did it deliver. Action scenes are very fluid, the colors are crisp, HD sports broadcasts are a crisp and clear. The internet apps are pretty neat, especially the twitter application which overlays the broadcasts you are watching so you can tweet without missing the action. The bluetooth remote is very convenient, however the lack of lighting on the remote makes it difficult to type in the dark. It is very light weight and very easy to set up with an easy to follow set up guide as well as on screen instructions to get you going. I bought this mainly for 3D gaming and it does not disappoint! Super Stardust HD in 3D is the perfect game to showcase 3D gaming. The glasses are comfortable, easy to use, but expensive. I'm hoping the prices drop soon as I'd love to have people over to watch ESPN 3D.
I am very satisfied with this TV, but there are a few areas where it falls short. The best audio out method available on the TV is via Optical out. This means DTS-MA is a no go. I really wish Vizio had added an HDMI audio pass through on this TV. Screen glare is an issue with this TV; you don't get the best picture unless the lighting is behind the TV or completely off. The TV has 3 USB ports, but you can't use them. It would've been great if this TV had some sort of DLNA or picture/music/video viewer to allow you to stream movies or plug in a USB drive to show your media. Hopefully a firmware update fixes that, but I'm not holding my breath.
Overall I'm glad with this purchase. If Vizio would've fixed the glare issue and added HDMI audio out, this would be *the* perfect TV.

(More customer reviews)I just received this TV today. So far so good. I was seriously confused between 46b650 and 46b630 and I am very happy that I got 630. Since my room has good ambient light, I was looking for anti glare screen and 630 is a perfect fit. 650 is too glossy for my setting, it is very good for dark room setting but otherwise glare could be very annoying. Yes, 630 has 80000:1 vs 100000:1 for 650 and I did notice the slight difference in contrast. I am yet to tweak picture settings. I got this from Vanns for $1530, got it in 5 days with free shipping and free wall mount.
UPDATE 1/22/11
Too bad, just after about 18 months of usage, TV gave up. Fortunately I bought 3 year warranty from Amazon so I am getting reimbursement for replacement TV. Main board and Panel went bad.

(More customer reviews)My hope is that this review will come across as credible after a brief introduction revealing my technical background. I have been a home theater enthusiast since 1995 and ran a small video and independent film business from 1996 - 2001. This review and check list are based on both personal research and professional experience. If you do not wish to read this entire review, feel free to scroll to the bottom where I have created a systematic checklist that will enable any Panasonic 800 series HDTV to maximize its fullest potential. More specifically, I will attempt to draw upon the televisions abilities when viewing Blu-ray movies which, to date, offer the best HD image quality and upgradeable potential.
If you factor tax and delivery, I bought the TH-50pz800U Plasma for about $700 less than retail and it performs great. The best-upgraded features on 2008/09's Panasonic 800 series include the 24p playback for Blu-ray movies and 100,000-hour lifespan of the display itself.
Why the 100,000-hour lifespan is important
This feature was a major selling point for me because I wanted a Plasma due to LCD's poor dark color reproduction but was worried about the shorter lifespan of most Plasma's which is typically only 30,000 to 70,000 hours. However, this baby specs out at 100,000, which is equal to 8 hours per day for over 34 years. Unheard of for Plasma displays until the 800 series arrived in April.
Why 24p is important
Although this HDTV supports a variety of features that will be better utilized in the next stage of HD technology 24p is here now. Currently only Blu-ray and a variety of high-end camcorders are capable of outputting 24p content. What is 24p? In a nutshell 24p is the frame rate in which images are displayed on your TV or Computer screens. A 24p capable system can display video at 24 frames per second rather than succumbing to display a converted video signal at 30 frames per second. This is important because all Hollywood films are shot and later projected in theaters at 24 frames per second. After theatrical release, studios then convert their films to 30 frames per second and ship them to the home video markets as well as television broadcast networks. This conversion process is known as 3:2 pull down and it means that you ultimately lose several frames as they are blended together to display at 30 frames per second. This is why you sometimes will not see smooth motion when you fast forward or rewind DVD's. Once a Blu-ray begins, be sure to use your TV remote to enter the advanced custom picture options and select 48Hz (a factor of 24) rather than 60Hz under the "24p Direct In" field. The instructions to set this up are included in the checklist at the end of this article. At first, you may notice a slight flicker but after your eyes adjust, you will feel as though a State of the Art film projector is rolling your favorite movies right in your living room. When you are done with 24p content, the TV will switch back to 30 frames per second (60Hz) automatically.
Future Proof
The other features available with the 800 series Panasonic's are intriguing but will not be able to dazzle you until media technology catches up. For example, this TV supports Deep Color, which is technically the next step up from True Color. True Color is the color depth standard that has been output to computer displays for years. Deep Color enables many more variations of color. Unfortunately, nothing on the market except for a few high-end camcorders output images utilizing this advanced color pallet. It is safe to assume that Blu-ray movies will do so in the future because of there massive storage capabilities. For PS3 owners you will need to turn on the "Super-White" feature under "Display Settings" to enable this functionality. It took a bit of research but essentially "Super-White" is Sony's name for Deep Color. Again, detailed instructions for setting up this feature can be found at the end of this review.

Many websites and message boards claim that Deep Color will not be a big deal when it finally arrives because its full potential is impossible to detect. What this means is that although Deep Color will offer several thousand additional color variations the human eye will only be able to differentiate about 360 of them. Still, further research will reveal that those 360 additional shades essentially push the entire color pallet of the human eye to its limits. In other words, all the real time color data that went into establishing the next shot of a film appears in front of you exactly as it did for the director. No visible shade of color gets lost or fades when put through the eventual electronic transfer process.
Do you remember when HDTV first came out? The early reviews claimed that the picture was so clear it was like looking through a window. Well, theoretically Deep Color will bring this statement to life because for the first time in history an electronic image will be able to reproduce every single color that is recognizable to the human eye.
Conclusion
The 800 series of Panasonic displays are the perfect solution for consumers looking to add a long-term home theater display to their arsenal. The set is ready for features that have potential to become more of an HD standard in the years to come. The product line is truly future proof and ready to adjust to the rapidly evolving HD industry. If you are like me, you may also be considering the only other real competition in the high-end Plasma HDTV market, Pioneer. If so, consider this; beginning next year Pioneer will no longer continue developing their HD product line from scratch. Instead, they will be outsourcing for raw plasma displays and then tweaking them. Where will they get these raw displays? You guessed it, Panasonic.
Checklist to maximize this TV's Performance
If you wish to enable feature 5 you may need to toggle between "Size 1" and "Size 2" for maximum visuals during Blu-ray Screenings/Video Gaming (Size 2) and all other viewing (Size 1)
1.Connect your Blu-ray player or PS3 using a Category 2 HDMI cable to ensure that you are ready for future Deep Color support as well as current support for a broader color space through x.v.Color. Be sure to connect this device to the first HDMI port labeled "HDMI 1" in the input menu. If you search Amazon by entering: Category 2 HDMI, you will find several affordable options.
a.HINT: Expensive name brand cables make no difference when transferring a digital signal and do not improve picture quality. Digital signals are either present or not present. There is no such thing as a weak digital signal. That is why the world is moving away from analog and switching to digital. All data that travels through an HDMI cable is 100% digital.
b.You want to use the first HDMI port because it is possible that the HDTV bases its HDMI compatibility for future devices on the first port. In other words if you do not install the device with the most compatibility into the first HDMI port then your Blu-ray player may be limited to the specifications of whatever device ends up getting plugged into the first HDMI port.
2.Set the television's picture mode to "Custom" from the display menu.
a.HINT: If you use the other picture modes (i.e. "Game," "THX") you will not be able to turn 24p and other advanced features specific to Blu-ray. However, you can always manually adjust the "Custom" levels (i.e. brightness, color, and tint) to match the other picture modes and you will get identical results. You may even wish to have the "Custom" levels professionally calibrated although these options are often a matter of personal taste. I find the default "Custom" display levels to be sufficient with a slight tint level adjustment towards the green end of the spectrum.
3.Turn on your PS3 or Blu-ray player and enable Deep Color support. You will only need to enable this on the initial setup.
a.HINT: Deep Color support may also be labeled "Super White," "x.v. color," "RGB Full or Wide," and "xvYCC." Although x.v.color, xvYCC, and RGB Full settings are not technically the same as Deep Color they do increase the color spectrum and can most easily be thought of as a stepping-stone towards the realism of Deep Color. In addition, when Deep Color becomes available most players will automatically support Deep Color when these options are on.
4.Leave your PS3 or Blu-ray player on and prepare to adjust a couple settings within the "Custom" picture mode you enabled during step 2. You will only need to make the following adjustments on the initial setup:
a.Set the "x.v. color" option to "Auto."
i.HINT: This option requires you to scroll to the second page within the "Custom" picture mode settings
b.While your Blu-ray player is turned on with any title playing select the "advanced picture" option from the "Custom" picture mode menu and select "48Hz" from the "24p Direct In" field. The TV will automatically adjust you back to "60Hz" when you finish watching a Blu-ray movie. In addition, it will automatically go back to "48Hz" when you put back in a Blu-ray movie.
i.HINT: If 48Hz is not available to select make sure that your Blu-ray player or PS3 has the most recent firmware update and that the movie is playing beyond the previews and preliminary copyright warnings. If your player is connected to the internet, the most recent firmware update should be installed automatically by selecting the players "check for update" option. For Blu-ray devices not connected to the internet or those that do not include and "update" option search the manufacturers website for a downloadable update which can be burnt to a CD and installed manually. Panasonic DMP-BD35K 1080p Blu-ray Player Review

(More customer reviews)I take my home theater hobby pretty seriously, that's why when it came time to invest in a Blu-Ray player (finally the wait is over!!!), I did a ridiculously great amount of research. I was willing to spend much more money on a blu-ray player, but the prices have come down so much, you don't have to! I narrowed down my extensive search for the right player to the Panasonic DMP-BD35K and the Sony BDP-S350. **I BOUGHT THEM BOTH AND DID A "SIDE-BY-SIDE" TEST!**
I have some nice equipment, so I feel that the test was an excellent representation of the capabilities of these two players. My equipment includes a 100-inch Stewart screen with a 1080p Sony Pearl front projector, an Integra 9.8 DTC processor (with all the latest surround sound goodies), a 7-channel NAD amp, 7 Paradigm Signature speakers, and a dual M&K subwoofer (for full 7.1 surround sound).
I do understand electronics, but the Sony manual was really hard to follow. After only one call to Sony, I eventually got the player set up properly. After I set up the Panasonic, everything became much clearer. The Panasonic manual is so much better. But, who really cares about manuals? How do these two players perform side by side?
Audio for BOTH Blu-ray discs and standard DVDs: The Panasonic unquestionably has better audio. Compared to the Sony, the highs were much clearer. The 7.1 surround sound put me right in the middle of the "explosion" (my first test blu-ray disc was National Treasure I) when the Charlotte blew up. The biggest Audio difference was the bass. The bass in the Panasonic was so much better than the Sony. In fact, my old Sony standard-DVD player had better audio than the Sony BDP-S350. I'd give the Sony 3 stars with the audio. The Panasonic had outstanding treble, bass, and surround: 5-star audio!
Video for BOTH Blu-ray discs and standard DVDs: The Sony's video was good, but the Panasonic's video was fantastic! The skin tones were more realistic and the colors were more vibrant with the Panasonic. The Sony seemed to have a thin gray film over everything -- like looking through a filmy-dirty window. The Sony had 4-star video (it looked good, but not nearly as good when directly compared to the Panasonic). The Panasonic and its upscaling gets an easy 5 stars!
Both my wife and I did the "side-by-side" test by going back and forth between Blu-Ray discs and standard DVDs. We didn't discuss any of our thoughts until we each independently formed our own conclusions. After seeing and hearing both players, we were both in complete agreement that in every way the Panasonic DMP-BD35K was superior to the Sony BDP-S350.
By the way, the card slot on the Sony for BD-Live is very hard to get to. I do like Sony as a brand for some things, but not Blu-Ray players.
For those of you who are doing your research, hopefully I can save you some time to answer if you should buy the Panasonic DMP-BD35K or DMP-BD55K. I called Panasonic and asked the differences; besides the price, there are only two differences. The 55K plays DivX's. If you don't have any DivX's like me and most of the people on planet Earth, this doesn't make any difference to you. The only other difference is that the 35K can only output Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio to a receiver/processor that has an HDMI input. If your receiver doesn't have an HDMI input, you won't be able to get them out of the 35K. If your receiver does have an HDMI input and you'll be using an HDMI cable, then you have absolutely no need to buy the 55K. With the 55K, if you have an older receiver that does not have an HDMI input, you can use the 55K's analog audio outputs so that you can have Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio. That's a nice feature of the 55K if you have an older receiver but want the latest surround sound formats.
Also, to save you some research time, I've already checked out all of the professional reviews including the ones on CNet.com: The Sony is considered ok, and CNet liked the Panasonic so much that it is the first Blu-Ray player EVER to receive CNet's "Editor's Choice Award."
I have to go to the store now and return the Sony player that I bought. I'm keeping the Panasonic!! :-)

(More customer reviews)I've been through 3 t.v.'s so far. The first t.v. I bought was my first HDTV ever but the picture was just not that good. I felt like it wasn't a good upgrade from SDTV. The second t.v. I bought had a really good HD picture and an acceptable SD picture, but no matter what I watched the picture was always dark for some reason even if I increased the brightness or contrast. That t.v. also lacked the inputs I needed for different things like my cable box, game systems, etc.
After deciding to give it one more shot, I stumbled upon this t.v. with it's great specs and many inputs. I have to say that this t.v. has excelled my expectations. From Standard definition channels to High definition channels, this t.v. is a winner. It is so bright even during the daytime (funny how others mentioned this too lol) and it has those inputs that I wanted. So far I've played my Xbox 360 on this t.v. and the picture cannot be beaten. The picture is so crisp and clear that it puts those other t.v.'s I had to shame. Oh and about the picture being dark, it can't be. I only have the settings on the "Game Mode" that this t.v. has and I can see every detail there is in the games. I haven't even brought up the brightness or contrast yet and there is no need for it! There is even an option in the menu to make dark scenes even more clear!
The sound on this t.v. is also good. I thought I had my surround sound speakers on when using the t.v. but I actually was using the t.v. speakers and yes they were that loud at a low volume setting. So here is how I sum it up:
VIDEO: 10 out of 10
I have not yet been disappointed with the SD or HD picture of this t.v. Whites are white, blacks are black.
AUDIO: 10 out of 10
If something ever happened to my surround sound speakers, I wouldn't care because it will be like they never broke.
INPUTS: 9 out of 10
It's nice that they're 3 HDMI inputs but I wish there was a second component input. But since everything is going HDMI these days, this is not a problem.
PRICE: 10 out of 10
I've seen this t.v. going for up to $899 but I bought it for $699. What a steal at this price.
OVERALL: 10 out of 10
Finally I have found the t.v. that I have been looking for all this time. I had to wait until 2008 to get it, but it was definitely worth the wait. If you have been waiting to get an HDTV, then now is the time to get it. You won't be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)I was tending towards getting a smaller Samsung LCD to complement the 46" model I now have when I came across this Panasonic unit. What a surprise to find not only did it have an even brighter, crisper picture, but it also had a decent set of speakers and some unique features lacking in the Samsung and Sony models. These features include an automatic shutoff option if the remote hasn't been used for 90 minutes - a handy feature if you fall asleep while watching or have kids who leave the tv on. In addition, if signal is lost or a component feeding the unit is shut off, this tv automatically turns itself off after a period of time. Also it has a black adjustment setting which provides the pitch black typical of Sharp models, or optionally a lighter black which better shows detail in darker areas like Sony and Samsung offer, if that is what you prefer. The unique lighting source gets rid of the buzz other reviewers have complained about in some smaller Samsung sets. Getting back to the speakers - having a decent pair is critical for smaller sets where you likely wont be using a stand alone set of speakers. The Samsung speakers tend to be marginal in their smaller sets. Perhaps the only drawback I saw to this unit was the design. Clearly not as striking as the Samsung or even Sony. However, the construction is solid and it has a decent traditional look. And for a price lower than Samsung or Sony, it is a steal. Seems as though Panasonic - well know for its quality plasma sets - is finally getting serious about becoming a major player in the LCD arena. I love my 46" LCD Samsung, but this is clearly the best choice and value for a smaller LCD.

We have basic cable with what we thought were only a few channels available but, when we plugged the Vizio in, it automatically scanned for veiwable channels and now we have about 10 more channels than we had before. If your looking for a good looking, affordable, easy to use TV, this is it! The menus are pretty easy to use and actually make sense. Also, in most menus there is a reset option in case you get lost and can't remember what you changed. We also have the Bose 321 system with HDMI (wich looks amazing) and Roku (netflix) with HDMI and pretty soon the PS3 with HDMI. It just so happens there are 3 conveniantly placed HDMI inputs on the TV. Hands down, one of the best decisions I've made in a while

I bought this TV within a week of Consumer Reports rating it as the best
picture they had ever tested, and I was still surprised at how breathtaking the picture was.
You cannot overrate this TV and its capabilities to deliver a picture like none you've seen before.
I do implore you, however, to invest in a blu-ray DVD player and a high quality HDMI cable for the full effect. The picture, when playing a blu-ray DVD on the new Panasonic blu-ray DVD player, along with a high quality HDMI cable (Panasonic makes maybe the best available for only $25)
is unbelievable. The definition is so amazing that your opinions of beautiful big screen actresses may come back down to earth after seeing the the blemishes in their complexion that you never would have seen on a
regular TV.
This TV is the pinnacle. There is no TV better.

(More customer reviews)This is phenomenal tv. I searched for quite some time, looking also at the Pioneer and Samusung models which are in the 60 to 63 inch range. I found this one to be the clearest, crispest, sharpest, and brightest picture. I went to Circuit City to see it in person, as I hate buying a product site unseen.
I am using a Comcast HDTV cable box with the DVR functionality. The HDTV channels look absolutely amazing, even when standing 1 foot from the set. UNBELIEVABLE. The normal (non-HD channels) also look very good. I noticed that normal channels also appear clearer and crisper than they did on other tv's. Not sure why that is exactly.
I mounted the tv to the wall, using the Omnimount tiltable wall mount system. As long as you hit studs for all 4 lag bolts, it will hold just fine. I was a bit nervous about mounting 115 pounds on the wall but its held just fine.
I am not a believer in over priced Monster cables. HDMI outputs are a digital signal--either it gets through or doesn't. It's not a sliding scale or progressive like an analog signal. I used the Philips HDMI cables from Walmart for $20. The picture is absolutely crisp from the cable box and from the dvd. It looks as good as the display model did in Circuit City, so I can't see the point of paying $140 for monster cables.
Whatever cable you choose, however, it will look good on this tv! You can't go wrong with this model!!

The *Hate* Points
1. Constant buzzing sound from the speakers even when the volume is low
2. Poor convergence at the edges looks that Speakers inside the TV produce magnetic interference that the manufacturer failed to notice.
3. Picture is too Dark in Standard Defination Mode (SD)
4. Unable make the 4:3 Aspect ratio lock permanently when used in HDTV mode it always defaults to 16:9 after power off.
5. The Menu for adjusting TV settings is TOO bright and *NOT* transparent.
6. Only *ONE* component Video Input!!!!!!!!!!! Come on panasonic, What were you thinking?.. This is a HDTV for Goodness sake!

If you can learn to live with the *Hate* points, then this is a decent TV.
I am keeping this TV as in HDTV mode the picture quality is excellent! in 1080i mode. It upconverts all signals to 1080 mode (Frequency doubling). It also as 3:2 pull down conversion for Flims, Velocity Modulation and Video Noise reduction makes the pictures very clean and sharp.
If you can ignore the poor convergence or lucky with your set you can surely keep this one for years to come.

(More customer reviews)This is only the second video projector I have ever purchased since I built my home theater 17 years ago but I have to say that it is an amazing product. I am certain that any purchaser will be extremely pleased with it. I am!
I own a SharpVision XV-S250ZU Video Projector which I purchased in 1992. It was "state-of-the-art" in its day and it could still produce a satisfactory image except for the fact that the LCD panels (organic) have deteriorated. While they could be replaced (and I may have this done some day), the cost would be high and I would still basically have a 1992 projector.
Knowing that I would want to replace the SharpVision, I began doing research on projectors, starting in 2007. I quickly eliminated single-chip DLP projectors as, having seen quite a few of them, I have found that both my wife and I are unusually sensitive to the "rainbow" effect noticeable with this kind of projector. We primarily watch older black-and-white movies and this "rainbow" effect is especially apparent with this type of programming.
I also quickly eliminated 3-chip DLP projectors due to their frightfully high cost.
Concentrating on 3-panel LCD projectors, I got down to two models: the Epson Powerlite V11H337020 Home Cinema 8500 LCD Home Theater Projector and this one, the Panasonic PT AE4000U - LCD projector - 1600 ANSI lumens - 1920 x 1080 - widescreen - High Definition 1080p. Both of these use inorganic panels and so should last even longer than my SharpVision.
The choice was difficult - I had no opportunity to see either "in the flesh" but, from what I have read (and I have read quite a bit), it seemed that, for our kind of viewing (older as well as newer movies, no television or games) and our venue (a fully darkened [with less than 5% ambient lighting] home theater), this one would be the better of the two. Almost all of the reviewers stated that this Panasonic produces much more "film-like" images than does the Epson (though, according to those reviews, they are fairly close).
I should mention that we do not watch current television shows in our home theater nor do we own a Blu-ray player. (We do watch the Academy Awards every year in our theater.) At this point, we still view only standard definition sources (DVD, LaserDisc, and, believe it or not, S-VHS and VHS tapes!). Thus I cannot comment at this time on 1080i or 1080p images (our home theater amplifier, a Yamaha RX-Z9 purchased in 2004, has no HDMI inputs so I will not be using the ones on the projector, at least at this time; I connect the video output from the amplifier to the projector via an S-video cable). I do not know if, or when, we'll be getting an HD source or sources: standard definition looks spectacular in our theater so we see no pressing need to "upgrade."
I have to state that I did not buy it from Amazon's partner which, as of this writing, is selling the projector ABOVE list price - and adds insult to injury by tacking on an inordinately high shipping charge; there are several online retailers who sell it for no more than list price and also do not charge shipping [see the first Comment for the name of the dealer from whom I bought this projector]. (I could not find anyone discounting it at this time.) Frankly, I wish Amazon themselves sold it (and at list price or less). If they had, I definitely would have purchased it from them although I must say that the dealer from whom I actually bought mine gave exemplary service, certainly as good as what you get from Amazon.
Now to the projector itself. It arrived yesterday so I have had limited (about five hours total) experience with it thus far but I can tell you that setting it up is quick and easy and the image it produces literally runs rings around any LCD (or DLP) projector I have ever seen.
The contrast is excellent and the black levels, in color movies' scenes or in black-and-white movies, are really fine with deep blacks yet good detail. I have not yet watched a newer movie with end credits (white lettering over a black background) so I can't comment on that - but, frankly, the black levels there, important to some reviewers, are not at all important to us.
The color is breathtaking!
And the overall picture is breathtaking too - FAR superior to any LCD or Plasma "flat-panel" television I have seen (and I've seen quite a few of them in "Home Theater Salons" as well as in peoples' homes). Only a few older "high-end" CRT televisions can produce as vibrant a color palette as can this projector, at least in my experience.
I effected some rudimentary changes in the color - I compared several options (and I have found that Cinema 1, really liked by some reviewers, is not satisfactory to me at least at this time; the colors are not saturated - they are not "colorful"). I am currently using Color 1 for color films [but see my first update below]. For black-and-white, Cinema 3 looks really good. (I watched THE WAR OF THE WORLDS [1953] which has particularly vibrant color and one of the episodes of THE UNTOUCHABLES television shows which has excellent black-and-white cinematography and has many dark scenes.) But I have a lot more experimentation to try before I decide positively on the permanent settings (though I'm fairly certain I'll keep on using Color 1 for color pictures - it produces really beautiful images). (We also watched a bit of the following features: WHOOPEE [1930], an early two-color Technicolor feature, RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK [1981], widescreen 2.35:1 and beautiful color - and spectacular sound, and MY FAVORITE YEAR [1982], 1.85:1 likewise with beautiful color.)
I left the format Autodetect feature On (the default) so the projector will recognize 4:3 and 16:9 programs and set the screen format automatically on my 16:9 screen. I also placed into the lens memory a setting for CinemaScope [Panavision] 2.35:1 to accommodate for my screen and this works perfectly.
By the way, I was able to effect these and several more changes WITHOUT READING THE OPERATING MANUAL. This projector is that easy to use! (I will read the manual and will view the included CD-ROM today.)
I might mention that I can see NO pixels even when I'm just two or three feet away from my screen. The screen is a Da-lite Pearlescent, purchased in 1992, and is 110" diagonal. The "throw" is 19 feet.
Some reviewers have commented that this projector is not as bright as some others, including the Epson I mentioned. But, in my venue, the brightness of the Panasonic is so much more than adequate I am able to use the Eco setting which reduces brightness and affords a 3000 hour average life to the bulb as opposed to operating it in Normal setting which gives only 2000 hours. I will be using that Eco setting; should the brightness become inadequate due to bulb aging, I can always switch to Normal. Of course I won't know about that for a good long time. (I also purchased a spare bulb which I recommend every purchaser do as well.)
According to virtually all the reviews I have read, if you are using a video projector in several venues, dark rooms as well as bright rooms (say, a living room during the daytime), the Epson, as well as a number of other projectors MIGHT be a better choice. (I cannot comment on this from personal experience however.)
But if you plan to use a projector exclusively in a fully darkened room (a home theater), as I do, it is my opinion that, when you figure in performance and price, you can do no better than this one.

Update - December 19, 2009
The adjustment ("tweak") possibilities of this projector seem to be almost endless. For the past several days, I have been "tweaking" the color adjustments to get the kind of color I like (which may or may not be the kind of color YOU like). I prefer saturated and vivid color. This may not be "accurate" but it is what I personally like to see on screen.
This projector has sixteen memories in which you can store color settings. Each memory can be named if you choose to do so and I did name the ones I'm using. After staying up until 1:00 AM last night, I now have two color settings which seem to work well for me. I have labeled one "Eastman Color" and the other one "Technicolor."
"Eastman Color" adds vividness to modern color films; my "templates" were FORBIDDEN PLANET (1956) and HOW THE WEST WAS WON (1962). Over the next few days I'll be watching other modern color films to see of any changes need to be made to this setting or if any other memories need to be created. Technicolor films are already quite vivid so my "Technicolor" setting is less extreme (for want of a better term) in adjustments than my "Eastman Color" setting; my "templates" for this setting was THE WIZARD OF OZ (1939) and GOLDFINGER (1964). I'll want to watch THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) and GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) to see if any adjustments are necessary to this memory. (I should mention that the "base" setting from which I have made my adjustments is Panasonic's Cinema 2 default which itself features a wide color range.)

I've been researching projectors off and on for the past 2 and a half years and have enjoyed the process of testing a virtually endless onslaught of manufacturers and different image quality. Finally decided on a Panasonic PT-AX200U due to a special running through HTmarket.com that had a mail in rebate for an additional 1 year warranty on the purchase of a Panasonic projector. I bought my projector for $1299 and have had about a month to play with the projector.
Initial highlights - good projector for the money if you have a good source (HD DVD/Blu Ray/upconverting DVD player). Very easy setup with image adjustments. I was up and running in 5 minutes.
Friends and family are stunned at the size of the screen images capable with this projector (I'm running a 110 inch screen). Clearly capable of more than that.
Good image for old format DVDs IF you have a DVD upconverter to 720p/1080i/1080p. I initially ran a couple of DVDs, the Incredibles, Lord of the Rings, the Matrix, Blade, into through my Denon DVD 2900 (originally a $1000 DVD player) and was somewhat disappointed by the pixelation and some noticeable Screen Door Effect (SDE).
My brother came over the following weekend with his Sony Playstation 3 and we ran one of his videogames through the HDMI cable into the projector to see if we could tell a difference - whoa, noticeable difference in image detail and elimination of the pixelation and SDE.
Went out to Best Buy the following weekend to buy a cheap RCA dvd up converter for $30 and now run all my DVDs through it.
Would recommend this projector if pairing to a high gain screen - the bulb brightness, while bright for stock, definitely requires a high gain (+1.3) screen to maximize some of the darker image films (Blade/Matrix/Lord of the Rings/Aliens).
